HATTIESBURG- Congressman Steven Palazzo honored a local Tuskegee Airman for his service.

Corporal Needham Jones Sr. received a Congressional Gold Medal Friday at a special ceremony. Jones who's 93 provided ground support for the Red Tails back in the 1940s.

He was also given a Red Tails Tuskegee Airmen leather jacket at the ceremony.

Palazzo thanked Jones for his service and talked about the importance of preserving history. The Red Tails were the first group of African American soldiers to fly airplanes and fight during World War II in the Air Force.

Jones said he remembers those segregated times being hard but,, but he doesn't regret the time he served for his country. He said he was thankful for the recognition.

"It's something that I thought would never happen," he said.

"The minorities that went over there and helped fight the war, history has shown that they really weren't recognized for their achievements and for their bravery and their sacrifices," said Rep. Steven Palazzo of the 4th Congressional District of Miss.
