Mississippi Catholic Leaders Respond to New Pope

The leaders of Mississippi's two Catholic Dioceses offer prayers and support to Pope Francis I.

Bishop Roger Morin of the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi called Wednesday's selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as Pope a "great day for the universal church."

Bishop Joseph Latino of the Catholic Diocese of Jackson says while the new Pope's burdens will be great -  he has faith Pope Francis will be a beacon of hope for the 1.2 billion Catholics across the globe.

Francis, the first Jesuit Pope and first non-European since the Middle Ages.

The new Pope is known for his work with the poor in Buenos Aires' slums.

    MOSELLE, Miss. - Jones County Major Jamie Tedford tell us deputies responded to a call just off of Old River Road at around 9:20 Wednesday night. We're told deputies found 17-year-olds Alexander Crews and Timothy Meadows standing near a pick-up truck as the body of 44-year-old Timothy Williamson laid on the ground.     In a meeting of the 2A (Bassfield) and 4A (Forrest Co. AHS) high school football state champions from a year ago, it was the smaller of the two schools that came out with something to prove Friday night. The Yellowjackets used their bulldozer of a running back T-Rod Daniels early and often, as the senior scampered for two bruising touchdowns in the first half. Bassfield entered halftime leading 12-0, and ultimately won by a score of 24-7.
