HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Mississippi Department of Transportation is almost finished with the construction on U.S. Highway 49.
MDOT started the project back in January. The construction was scheduled to be complete this month and the project engineer said they are only a few weeks away from finishing.
Dave Steele, MDOT construction engineer, said they replaced the center left turn lane with a raised median from 31st Avenue down to Convention Center.
"This will prevent left turn accidents," said Steele. "There's been numerous accidents and pedestrian deaths through this section."
Now the only places you can turn left is at Campbell Loop and north 31st Avenue.
Steele said they did have a few set backs.
"There were some slow downs, when it rains it delays work," he said. "The tornado really didn't affect this project."
The last steps to complete the project is to lay down new a black top and stripe the pavement again with lanes.
"We should be completing the landscaping this week," Steele said.
The project cost about one million dollars to complete.
