Downtown Hattiesburg Prepares For Art Walk

Posted: Updated:

Downtown Hattiesburg is gearing up for the spring art walk this weekend.

Several businesses will display the work of local artists. All of the festivities will start at 4 PM. Many of the painters will be  downtown to meet and greet people.

Local artist Andrea Kostyal says the inspiration for one of her latest pieces comes from the recent tornado.

She says, " I didn't want to show the depressing sad feeling, I want to show more optimism"

Kostyal  named the piece, "Restore, Recover, Rebuild." This is one of many pieces that will be on display during art walk.

The downtown restaurant 206 Front displays some of her work inside the restaurant.

"We're real proud to feature local artists."

Tom White owns the restaurant. He says he tries to feature a different local artist's work every season.

He says," it's an opportunity for them to be noticed by the public and get some of their art work sold as well."

Betsy Rowell is the executive director of the Hattiesburg Downtown Association. She says the buyers usually come to art walk for one main reason.

"You get to meet the artist and know and become friends with them."

Kostyal says, "downtown comes alive at art walk."

Kostyal plans to donate 20 percent of the proceeds she makes from the tornado paintings to a non-profit that's helping families recover.
