Southern Miss Signs Left-Handed Pitcher Brandon Fry for 2014

Posted: Updated:

Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry announced Friday its first signing of the spring period with the signing of a national letter of intent by Brandon Fry, a 6-foot-2, 185 lb., left-handed pitcher from Pearl River Community College.

"Brandon will be a great addition to our pitching staff next season," Southern Miss assistant coach Chad Caillet said. " He has had a tremendous year for PRCC in both a starter and a relief role. Brandon has a live young arm with a power curveball.  He showed a great deal of presence late in games with the ability to get big strikeouts when his team needed it. We are very excited to add another quality left-handed pitcher like Brandon to our young pitching staff."

Fry has accumulated a 5-0 record and six saves for the Wildcats this spring with a 2.85 earned run average and 45 strikeouts in 41 innings of work.  He has helped lead PRCC to a 36-10 record through the regular season this spring and a first-place finish in the MACJC South. The Wildcats open a best-of-three series Friday when they play host to North Division No. 4 seed Itawamba Junior College.

He played his freshman season at Northwest Florida State College.

Fry prepped at Nease High School in Jacksonville, Fla., where he was a three-sport athlete. He garnered all-state honors in both football and basketball, and earned all-district honors in baseball.

He is the son of Shawn and Jennifer Mick.

In a meeting of the 2A (Bassfield) and 4A (Forrest Co. AHS) high school football state champions from a year ago, it was the smaller of the two schools that came out with something to prove Friday night. The Yellowjackets used their bulldozer of a running back T-Rod Daniels early and often, as the senior scampered for two bruising touchdowns in the first half. Bassfield entered halftime leading 12-0, and ultimately won by a score of 24-7.
