USM student recovering at Forrest General Hospital

Posted: Updated:

Blake Ballard (22) from Brandon, Miss. remains in the ICU as he recovers from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He will not be charged with a crime because in his particular case he broke no state law. There is an exception to Mississippi code 97-37-17 that makes it a felony for any student to possess or carry a firearm on university property. Any student age 21 or over who has obtained an enhancement to a concealed firearms permit is not in violation of state law if he or she brings a firearm onto university property. Ballard falls into that category.

As far as violating University policy about possessing firearms on campus, officials say those issues will be dealt with at a later time.
