One day before play begins in the 2013 Conference USA Softball Championship, Southern Miss freshman infielder Morgan McKeever was named to the league's 11-member All-Freshman team, the conference office announced today.
McKeever is the fifth Golden Eagle to make the team in as many years and the 14th overall since 2001.
The Tucson, Ariz., native, who transferred in to Southern Miss in January, made an immediate impact as the team's opening day third base starter. After 11 games, an injury to starter Meaghen Nelson forced her to move to second and 17 games later, a defection from the team put McKeever at shortstop where she has started the past 25 games. No other team member who has started at three positions has started more than five games there.
Prior to taking over the shortstop position, that spot in the defense had committed 10 errors through 29 starts. In McKeever's 25 games at short, she has committed just two errors and those came in the same game against Memphis back on April 6 meaning she has played 98 consecutive innings without making an error and has just seven on the year encompassing three positions.
McKeever has also led the conference in assists with 123 for the majority of the season and enters the tournament second behind Houston's Holly Anderson (125).
The awards come on the heels of having a pair of players named to the league's prestigious All-Academic team in Kimberly Wagner and Mackenzie Sher. Additionally, Houston catcher Haley Outon was named the league's Player of the Year, Aimee Creger of Tulsa picked up Pitcher of the Year honors while UAB's Marla Townsend was named the league's Coach of the Year.
Southern Miss begins C-USA Championship play tomorrow when they take on No. 1 seed and regular season champion UAB at 4:30 p.m. from Collins Family Field in Tulsa.
