Southern Miss Steps out of Conference Play This Weekend to Face SIUE

Posted: Updated:

The Southern Miss baseball team steps out of Conference USA play this weekend when they entertain SIUE for a three-game set this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday, and 1 p.m., on Sunday and all three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network with flagship station, WKZW-FM, 94.3, broadcasting all the action in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area.

This series opens the final homestand for the Golden Eagles (25-21) which also includes Ole Miss next Tuesday, May 14.

Heading into the weekend, the two schools have met just once previously on the diamond, with SIUE winning a 4-2 decision on the Golden Eagle campus back on March 24, 1970.

More recently, Southern Miss has played well as of late by winning 14 of its last 19 contests and sit atop the conference standings by 1 ½ games, despite dropping two-of-three at East Carolina last weekend, which snapped a five-series winning streak. In other C-USA action this weekend, Tulane is at UCF, Memphis is at Rice, East Carolina is at Marshall and UAB is at Houston.

Senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce (9-1, 2.27 ERA) will move up a day in the rotation as he will start the series opener on Friday against SIUE righty Caleb Wilkerson (1-4, 6.18 ERA).

The Golden Eagles are yet to be determined with their starting pitching the rest of the week, while SIUE has announced lefthander Tony Schaeffer (1-4, 4.01 ERA) will take the hill for the Cougars in the second contest.

Southern Miss' offense has picked it up the last couple weeks as they have posted double-digit hit affairs in four of the last six contests to raise the team batting average to .265 on the campaign.

The Golden Eagles continue to be among the nation's leaders in double plays turned. After registering five last weekend at ECU, Southern Miss has 64 on the year which is good for a second-place tie nationally with Texas Tech.

Also this weekend, the program will recognize its 2013 senior class, which consists of infielder Blake Brown (Semmes, Ala.), infielder Travis Creel (Ocean Springs, Miss.), outfielder Dillon Day (Geismar, La.), catcher Chase Fowler (Cumming, Ga.), left-handed pitcher Paxton King (Brookhaven, Miss.), right-handed pitcher Pierce (Stringer, Miss.), and infielder Isaac Rodriguez (Weston, Fla.), prior to the game on Saturday.
