Man Charged With Arson and Homicide of Purvis Woman

Posted: Updated:

"The house was fully engulfed when they got there. The fire was extinguished and they found the human remains within the residence," says Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel.

Authorities say oxygen tanks exploded while firefighters were trying to control the blaze Monday night. After a thorough investigation, a suspect is now behind bars charged in connection with the fire and the death of the woman. "Timothy Taylor, 36-years of age, from Purvis, was arrested and charged with first degree arson and also murder," says Rigel.

Taylor appeared in court Tuesday and was denied bond on both charges. He's currently in the Lamar County Jail. Rigel says Taylor and the victim were acquaintances. There are more questions that need to be answered like how was the fire started, Rigel admits, "That's part of the investigation I really can't say." Rigel could not confirm if the victim was murdered before the fire or the fire was the murder weapon. "Right now we're waiting on the autopsy results, the positive identification of the victim and everything will be forwarded to the district attorney's office and the grand jury."

Rigel says the body of an elderly woman is now in Jackson where an autopsy is being performed. The woman's name is not being released at this time.
