Golden Eagle Seniors Go Out in Style in 10-3 Home Finale Win

Posted: Updated:

Southern Miss held its official senior day last Saturday at Pete Taylor Park, but the 2013 class waited to celebrate three days in their final home game.

Five Golden Eagle seniors combined for 10 hits of Southern Miss' 16 hits to defeat Ole Miss, 10-3, here Tuesday night in front of a season-high crowd of 4,526.

Travis Creel and Blake Brown led the senior class with three hits, while Isaac Rodriguez added two and Dillon Day and Chase Fowler tallied one each. Sophomore Austin Roussel added a game-high four hits and now has gone 9-for-9 lifetime against the Rebels in three career contests.

"I'm really proud of our seniors," Berry said. "Of the 16 hits, 10 of them came from our seniors. Travis Creel had some big hits for us. Blake Brown, obviously, stepped up big. Isaac (Rodriguez) again, he just continues to hit, and Chase, he keeps finding a way to keep getting it done."

Southern Miss also got six strong innings from starter A.J. Glasshof (1-2) who limited the No. 14-ranked Rebels (35-18)  to just four hits and a walk with a strikeout over six innings to get the victory.

The Golden Eagles (27-23) started their scoring with a four-run fourth inning. After consecutive singles by Creel and Rodriguez to start the frame, Southern Miss chased Rebel starter Jacob Waguespack. With his hit, Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to a team season-best 16 games.

Mason Robbins welcomed reliever Austin Blunt with a sacrifice fly, extending the Golden Eagle's run of driving in at least one run to 10 of the last 11 games.

Freshman Tim Lynch then added an RBI double before Brown lifted his seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot, to leftfield.

The Golden Eagles added four more runs in the sixth. With two outs, Brown, Fowler and Roussel strung together three singles with the last one driving in Brown. After Fowler scored on a wild pitch, Creel ended the inning's scoring with a two-run single.

Brown knocked in another run in the seventh with a single and then Roussel scored on a wild pitch, after reaching base with a triple that got over the Ole Miss' centerfielder head in the eighth.

Waguespack (0-1) lasted three-plus innings in the game, and allowed two runs on four hits to suffer the loss.

The Golden Eagles now set their sights to the final weekend of the regular season as they will go after their third Conference USA regular season championship when they travel to face Houston. With two victories over the Cougars, Southern Miss will clinch the title outright.
