HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Six members of the Southern Miss track and field teams are headed to the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary Championship from May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C., for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Six Golden Eagles will vie for a chance to advance to the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Ore., as individuals must finish in the top 12 in the quarterfinal round.

Redshirt senior Kyle Smith, who missed all of last season recovering from arm surgery, heads into the competition ranked fifth overall in the javelin. Smith captured a gold medal at the Conference USA Championship last week, adding his second title in three years.

Junior Ethan Rich will also compete in the javelin as he enters the competition ranked in the top 30. Rich finished third at the C-USA Meet.

Sophomore Randy McCoy recorded a qualifying time of 13.94 in the 110-meter hurdles ranks him among the top 20 leaders. Derrick Johnson will compete in the 400 meters after posting a qualifying time at the Ole Miss Invitational.

Stephanie Ledgerwood will compete in the 10K race as her qualifying time of 34:21.82 ranks her among the top 25.

Krista Moylan, who finished second at the C-USA Meet, will compete in the 3,000-meter steeple.

Competition gets underway on May 23 with Johnson competing in the preliminary round of the 400 meters while Ledgerwood competes in the 10K. Smith, Rich, McCoy and Moylan are slated to compete on Friday in their respective events.
