Golden Eagle Soccer Inks Adriana Garcia for 2013 Season

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head women's soccer coach Mohammed El-Zare announced the signing of Adriana Garcia to a national letter of intent for the 2013 class on Wednesday.

Garcia, a four-year letterman and defensive standout for coach Kara Stracener at Claudia T. Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas, will join the Golden Eagles for the 2013 season and becomes the eighth addition to the 2013 squad.

Johnson's squad advanced to the semi-final round of this season 5A Texas state semi-finals, and Jaguars concluded their season with a 21-4-3 overall record. Garcia helped lead the team to 14 shutout victories and one scoreless draw over the course of the year.

She was also the annual recipient of The Fincke Cup scholarship award, issued annual by Ian's Foundation, which provides scholarships to graduating San Antonio area seniors in memory of Ian Fincke and advances the safety of San Antonio's youth through educational and recreational activities. Garcia earned the award based on merit and a vote from her teammates and coaches.

Additionally, Garcia was a unanimous All-District first-team member over her final three years and helped lead her team to the NEISD District 26 5A Championship and UIL Region IV Championship during her senior campaign.

"Adriana is a player that can play any position well," Stracener said. "That's why she is dangerous in the back. She has the ability to shut players down and then get into the attack the next minute which makes it very hard for other teams to defend."

El-Zare added, "It's rare that a player of Adriana's caliber is available this late in the game, but we're very excited for her potential to do great things for us. She will add a noticeable degree of toughness to our team right away."
