Hattiesburg City Hall Left Unlocked and Vault Open Overnight

Posted: Updated:

Last night Hattiesburg City Hall was left unlocked, and the vault holding the affidavit ballots that would determine the 2013 Hattiesburg mayoral election was also left open.

John Brown, Assistant to the Mayor, confirmed this information. Brown is not calling the incident a "break in" because nothing was stolen or damaged. The ballots inside the vault remained sealed and intact.

Brown said City Clerk Eddie Myers was reportedly the last to leave City Hall last night, and neglected to completely close the vault and also neglected to ensure the doors of City Hall were locked.

WHLT is waiting on the official police information report from the Hattiesburg Police Department.
