The final phase of turf installation at M.M. Roberts Stadium is underway.
Hellas Sports Construction heads up the project.
Base improvements and a new collector system are already in place, improving playability and drainage with the new Matrix Turf system.
The turf also includes the company's patented Realfill system.
This will prevent infill fly-out and splashing when athletes make cuts on the field, something that excites administration even more than the players.
I think once the players kind of get out there on it they'll be extremely excited, and I think our fan base will be," says USM Deputy Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain.
But McClain says there wasn't much to be excited about a little more than four months ago.
"Obviously, the tornado was a devastating time for the community."
Now, he says the community can rally behind the silver lining.
"We're trying to turn that into a positive, and create a new and improved atmosphere here at the stadium, and we do think the turf is going to create some of that - create some excitement and give the stadium a newer, fresher look."
McClain hopes the new look field continues to move Southern Miss athletics forward.
"With a lot of television eyes on us, we think the new design of the field and the turf will really show well on television, and help us create that Southern Miss brand."
McClain says the project will be finished by the end of the month, but he is targeting another date in the near future as well.
"Once they see it down, and that first game gets here - Aug. 31 - when it's time for kickoff it's going to look really good, and be fun and exciting."
McClain did not disclose the total cost of the project.
