HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss softball co-head coaches Kirsten Voak and Jon Malgradi announced on Friday the addition of Peyton Garner to their 2013 signing class.
"Peyton has been on our radar for quite some time," said Voak. "The opportunity to get a player of her caliber is just outstanding and every one in our program is excited to have her. She is an Arizona product who we were very familiar with, and I can't wait to see what she can accomplish once we get her here in Hattiesburg."
Garner, who prepped at Campo Verde High in Gilbert, Ariz., carried a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career and brings a stellar academic resume to Southern Miss along with her accolades on the diamond.
In 2011, Garner picked up Honorable Mention All-Region honors while playing club ball for the Arizona Hotshots. On the club circuit, she helped the team to a pair of first place finishes at the TCS Oktoberfest and TCS Superbowl with the AZ Outlaws 16A and a second place finish at the ASA April Fools event, also with the Outlaws.
In the classroom, Garner earned the Golden Scholar award from 2009 to 2012 while also tallying over 600 hours of community service. After earning an achievement award in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, Garner will enroll in the school's renowned athletic training program.
Garner joins nine other signees for the class who will all join the Golden Eagles this August for the 2013-14 campaign. The class to date includes: Dani Block (Phoenix, Ariz.), Selena Estrada (Panama City, Fla.), Arielle Pollock (Windermere, Fla.), Hannah Moore (Carthage, Miss.), Bragan Burns (Gardendale, Ala.), Mikayla Davis (Orange Park, Fla.), Rachel Hickman (Poplarville, Miss.), Rachel Johnson (Southaven, Miss.) and Sami Robles (Texas City, Texas).
