HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Today marks the 237th anniversary of our nations freedom. Families across America are celebrating, but how many of them actually know why?

According to Marist College Institute For Public Opinion, only 58 percent of U.S. residents know that the country gained its independence in 1776. About one in four Americans don't know that it was from Great Britain. We took some basic questions that could be on the American Citizenship test to the streets and asked some Pine Belt residents for the answers.
