Hattiesburg Same-Sex Couples Apply For Marriage License

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Six same-sex couples marched to the Forrest County Courthouse Friday to apply for a marriage license knowing they would be denied.

The couples are with the group called Campaign for Southern Equality. The peaceful assembly was a part of the "We Do Campaign," .an action that pushes for equal marriage rights for the LGBT community.

Lynn and Sara Bell were married two years ago in Connecticut, but that union is not recognized here in their home state.

["We are legal strangers in Mississippi," said Sara Bell.

This is not the first time they've applied for a marriage license in Mississippi.

"We actually did this in January," she said.

The Bells say it never gets easier hearing city officials say, "You are denied."

"It's going to be heart breaking," she said.

"When she said the words, I have to deny this, I just started shaking," said Carolyn Lucas, who plans to marry her partner, Christina Koester, next year in New York. 

They said they wanted to do this because one day they know it will be worth it.

"I know it's coming," Lucas said. 

Campaign of Southern Equality Communications Director Aaron Sarver said the recent Supreme Court rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act was a step forward to marriage equality.

"Citizens who pay their taxes, who can vote, deserve to have full legal rights," Sarver said.

"We will have to fight for this as long as it takes," said Sara Bell.@
