Kids Learn BEEF Principle at JCJC's Shoot the Basketball Clinic

Posted: Updated:

At Jay Ladner's first annual shoot the basketball clinic, the JCJC head basketball coach uses a certain kind of meat to teach the 38 campers how to shoot.

"We talked about beef earlier this morning," says Ladner.

But this kind of cow is an acronym for the proper shooting technique.

"Starts with good balance, and obviously have to have elbow in proper alignment, eyes to the basket and proper follow through," says Ladner. "That's a great way for the kids - a simple way for them to learn some of the basics of shooting."

One camper demonstrates the effectiveness of the second 'E' and the 'F'.

"So if your elbow's in then it's a straight shot," says seventh grade camper Luke Ladner. "If it's out, it'll curve like a curveball and go out. And the follow through keeps spin on the ball."

Luke explains the BEEF principle like the true son of a coach.

"He probably catches a little more of the heat than the rest of the kids would normally do, but that's alright," says Ladner. "I feel like he knows better but he knows I love him too."

Even with Luke's victory in a game called hot shot, Ladner still pushes his son to do better.

"He was like, '31? Eh'," says Luke. "And I was like, 'okay'."
