Bill McGillis Named New Southern Miss Athletics Director

Posted: Updated:

The University of Southern Mississippi President Dr. Rodney Bennett announces the university's new Athletic Director.

"Please help me welcome to the podium, Bill McGillis," says Bennett at Thursday's press conference at USM's Trent Lott Center.

McGillis comes to Southern Miss from the University of South Florida, where he currently serves as Executive Associate Athletic Director.

At USF, McGillis oversaw the construction of six new athletic venues in a 24-month span, making it one of the largest athletics projects undertaken at a Division I institution in decades.

He brings more than 25 years of administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics to Southern Miss, serving roles with the Universities of Evansville, New Mexico and Houston prior to working with USF.

McGillis replaces Jeff Hammond, whose contract expired on June 30. Deputy Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain currently serves as USM's interim AD.

McGillis exudes confidence as he steps into his new role.

"We are not going to take a back seat to anybody in this state, or anybody in the conference or anybody in the country," says McGillis.

The details of McGillis' contract remain undisclosed.
