Longleaf Elementary Holds Ribbon Cutting

Longleaf Elementary Principal Angela McCarty's vision became a reality today.

"We were beginning to get overcrowded in the Oak Grove Primary, Lower and Upper schools, so we had a vision to spread them out," she said.

Teachers, students and members of the community celebrated the official opening of the new school with a ribbon cutting.

One teacher says she appreciates the support.

"We've already had so many parents come out this year - his summer, helping clean up the school," first grade teacher Christy Marshall said.  "Everybody is so excited, and our principal is amazing.

McCarty said she is excited about the expansion of the science departments.

"I partnered with USM Natural Science Center, and they have a garden in back, and we also have garden beds for grades to use as well as - we have a chicken coop," McCarty said.

For the school to offer so much, students say something is still missing.

Fourth graders Myles Hudson and Tyler Posey said they'll have to fundraise for playground equipment.

Registration for returning students is this Friday, and school officially starts next Wednesday at 7:50.

The school is centrally located on west fourth street, but current road construction might make it difficult to find.

McCarty says to disregard the road closed signs and check out the school's web site for road construction updates.
