HATTIESBURG, Miss. – First-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken made one small tweak during the fourth workout of fall camp here Monday morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility and the result seemed to pay dividends for the squad.
The Golden Eagles, which have been practicing during the mid-mornings, still have had to endure heat index marks that have reached the mid- to high-90s levels and Monken decided to give them a small break about halfway through the squad's second day in shoulder pads and shorts.
Following the 2 hour, 45 minute practice, Monken explained his thinking about trying to keep his players a little fresher during the session. The result was he thought his team getting a little better.
‘We gave them a little bit of a halftime for five minutes in the shade and that helped a lot," said Monken, who mentioned that there were a few players who were unable to finish practice the previous day. "(In addition to the break) we had snacks in the meeting rooms and made them hydrate better today."
Through the first four sessions, Monken declined to point out any specific individual standouts in camp, but rather remarked about his pleasure in the overall effort of the squad.
"It is hard to pick out one or two," said Monken. "Our guys have been great in terms of their attitude, body language and work ethic - and they were better today."
The Golden Eagles return to the practice fields Tuesday morning in full pads for the first time as they continue preparations for the 2013 season and its opener, Aug. 31, at home against Texas State.
