HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team enjoyed a break in the weather during its only practice here Tuesday morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles worked for two and a half hours in shoulder pads and shorts and first-year coach Todd Monken was asked after workout if the team improved during their session.
"I would say so," said Monken. "Obviously the weather helped. The cloud cover and the breeze were a lot better today, so our guys had a little more juice (in their step)."
It was the first time in nine morning practices during training camp that the Golden Eagles got a little relief from the heat.
Overall, the Golden Eagles have gone through 12 practices over the first 10 practice days of camp and Monken said that fundamentally the Golden Eagles are getting better. He also stressed that the team must continue its hard work and continue to eliminate mistakes as it works toward the 2013 campaign and the season opener at home, Aug. 31, against Texas State.
"We are better in terms of assignment and alignment (since the start of practice), but I don't think we are there yet when it comes to execution on either side," said Monken. "That's why you practice. We just keep trying to eliminate all the silly things, so I think we are doing a better job of that."
The Golden Eagles return to a two-a-day practice schedule on Wednesday, going in full pads during the morning workout and then in shorts in the evening session.
