Judge Grants Hattiesburg Special Election For Mayor's Race

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -  Judge William Coleman granted a special election for the City of Hattiesburg during a hearing at the Forrest County Circuit Court Thursday.

Attorneys for Dave Ware, the former mayoral candidate who filed a Petition of Contest concerting the June 4 mayor's race, filed motions with the court last Friday, asking for Judge Coleman to uphold the original verdict of 9 to 3 that the jury gave in the case.

When Coleman polled the jury in open court, the verdict count was 8 to 4; the judge decided to grant a mistrial due to the inconsistencies of the verdict.

Today, judge said he could not uphold the original verdict because the jury's poll was not the same. However, he decided a special election would be best to determine the winner.

The date for the election has not been set and will have to be given by Governor Phil Bryant.
