State Troopers Gear Up For Labor Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Labor Day holiday weekend is here and the Mississippi Highway Patrol wants all drivers to be safe.

"We plan on having extra shifts out," said Brent Barfield, public affairs officer for Troop J.

MHP will be looking for motorists committing safety violations.

"Speeding, distracted driving, and seat belts," he said. "Speeding is definitely a killer over the holiday weekend.

If you are thinking about texting behind the wheel, think again.

"Just don't do it, " Barfield said. "It takes too much attention away from the road."

He said don't forget to move over for emergency vehicles sitting on the side of the road.

"The law says they have to move over," he said.

The official holiday weekend for MHP will end Sept. 2 at midnight.
