USM Breaks Ground On New Dorm, Health Facility

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi breaks ground on a new dorm that will also house a new health facility.

The new housing facility, Century Park South, will be located on 4th Street. About 950 beds will be made available to students.

"Students today really make decisions about college based on their total living and learning experiences," said USM President Dr. Rodney Bennett. "The facility, Century Park South will go along ways in helping our students reach their goals academically."

The facility will be composed of three buildings. The first one will be a new health clinic. School officials say they've outgrown their old space.

"It has a 5,000 more sq. ft. than the original facility," said Dr. Virginia Crawford, director of student health services.

She said the new building will house a pharmacy, a lab, and a dentist office.

"Students have requested a dentist so we're adding that," she said.

Building B will be used as a residence hall for students in the Luckyday Scholarship Program.

"All of our freshman will be required to live in the Luckyday Freshman Hall," said Holmes Adams, director of the board of managers of the Luckyday Foundation.

Building C will house more students. Bennett said the project will cost about $55 million.

"We sold bonds for part of the funding," he said.

The rest of the money came from donations by the Moffitt family and the Luckyday Foundation.
