Lady Eagles Make Annual Visit to USM's Children's Center

The Lady Eagles take a break from early morning workouts to make a trip to "the playground."

"You know it's not strictly basketball," says Southern Miss senior point guard Jamierra Faulkner. "We give our time back to make a few kids smile."

Today marks the third year in a row the Lady Eagles have made a trip to the Southern Miss Children's Center, a visit the team has been looking forward to for a long time.

"Before we got started with practice or our preseason workouts and those things, they said,'Coach we don't have the Children's Center on our schedule. What's up with that?'," says Southern Miss head women's basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis.

The Lady Eagles are now in the full swing of preseason workouts with less than a week left before fall practice.

That makes today's experience even more rewarding for the 10th-year head coach.

"It makes us all step back and see how fortunate and how blessed that we really are," says Lee-McNelis. "But we're also very blessed today to be able to make a difference."

The Lady Eagles interacted with more than 90 kids from 23 different counties at this year's visit, a potentially life changing experience for some of the players.

"We're training these students and maybe some of the Lady Eagles will choose a major that works with children with disabilities, so it is something that we look forward to every year," says Children's Center Director Sarah Case-Price.

The Lady Eagles start fall practice on Monday.
