"State of Women" report gives North Carolina a "D-"

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

When it comes to how women fare across the nation, North Carolina doesn't make the grade.

A national report released by the Center for American Progress looked at the overall "state of women" in each state. North Carolina scored a "D-"

The analysis was based on overall leadership, health, and economic factors involving women.

The report also pointed out the pay gap between men and women. According to the study, for every dollar a white male makes, women overall make only $0.82. That number drops to $0.64 for African American women, and drops again to only $0.49 for Hispanic women.

"Women recognize it, right out of college they're not making the same as their fellow college graduate who's a male," explained Tara Romano, president of North Carolina Women United.

"Everyone wants to be paid fairly for doing their job competently, she said.

A push for a state-wide pay equity act didn't make it through the last legislative session.
