RALEIGH, N.C. -

A longtime state government employee with expertise on North Carolina transportation matters is leaving his current post at the end of the month for the private sector.

Jim Trogdon has been chief deputy secretary of operations since 2009. He announced Tuesday he will retire to become a vice president at private consulting firm Atkins. Trogdon previously worked as a DOT field engineer and director of strategic transportation planning for the General Assembly before taking his current job.

DOT Secretary Tony Tata praised Trogdon's years of service. Trogdon worked in the last few years on effort to retool the state's road-building formula.

Trogdon is also a major general in the North Carolina National Guard, serving as deputy adjutant general.
