Lady Eagle Basketball Team Hits the Court for First Practice

Posted: Updated:

The countdown begins for the Lady Eagle basketball team.

"We've got about 38 days before our first tipoff," says Southern Miss senior point guard Jamierra Faulkner.

"It's actually 38 days until we tip it off for real," says Southern Miss head women's basketball coach Joye Lee-Mcnelis. "Now it's 37."

With day one of practice already in the books, the tenth-year head coach knows Nov. 8 is right around the corner.

"Time flies," says Lee-McNelis. "It does not stop, and every player every day has to make a step - make one step higher so that we can rise up as one."

The Lady Eagles look to do that by building on last year's 15-16 overall record, the kind of improvement that starts in the gym.

"We want effort and we want a great attitude, and if we do that we'll be able to accomplish a lot of things at our practices," says Lee-McNelis.

By translating today's hard work to the season ahead, the Lady Eagles lay the foundation for success.

"We're preparing and we're working hard, and if we work hard and don't cheat ourselves, we have no choice but to come out on top," says Faulkner.

"We want to be better so we will be prepared to win a conference championship," says Lee-McNelis.

The Lady Eagles return to the court tomorrow for practice number two at 7:30 in the morning.
