Forrest Co. EMA Prepares For Tropical Storm Karen

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - City and state officials prepare for the upcoming Tropical Storm Karen and they want for you to be ready.

"It's currently making it's way from the Gulf of Mexico around the Yucatan Peninsula," said Kyle Hopkins, operations officer of the Forrest County Emergency Management District.

"We are probably looking at a lot of rain and some wind in the Pine Belt," he said. "We are not planning on opening any shelters at this time."

However, he said it's better to be safe than sorry.

"Some things residents need to do to prepare is to make sure you have plenty of water, batteries, flashlights, weather radios, and non-perishable foods," he said.

EMA officials are monitoring the storm closely.

"We've been on conference calls with the weather service and with the states emergency management agency," Hopkins said. "They are expecting it to turn into a hurricane probably in the next 24 hours at least and then drop back down to a tropical storm."
