MDOT Preps For Tropical Storm Karen

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Mississippi Department of Transportation said that their staff is prepared to help drivers on the road if Tropical Storm Karen become a problem for motorists.

"We've already set up our emergency operation center," said MDOT District Six Maintenance Engineer Cape Jones.

He said the roads in Hattiesburg shouldn't get too bad.

"We do expect some localized flooding on the coast," he said. "We have all our crews and people on standby ready to go."

About a dozen workers will be  in the operation center monitoring the storm.

"We'll set up traffic control and  close roads if we need it," Jones said. "The storm's intensity and the track currently does not need for us to plan for contraflow."

Contraflow is when they block off southbound lanes on the interstate so that traffic only travels North.

"Contraflow is initiated when Louisiana's governor makes a request for it," he said.

The best thing for drivers to do is stay alert and cautious on the road.

"Don't drive if you can help it," Jones said. "Stay off the roads if possible."
