USM Presents Golden Eagle Statue

Posted: Updated:

The University of Southern Mississippi erected a 22-foot golden eagle statue.

It stands in an area near the All-American Rose Garden on Hattiesburg's campus.

The piece was donated by Southern Miss graduate and Texas businessman Chuck Scianna.

The sculptor, David Anderson said this two year project is the largest sculpture he's ever built.

He considers himself an artist who focuses mainly on realism.

He said That's shown in the details of the golden eagle.

The title of the piece is "Lofty Return."

"The piece iconography is that when they go out and hopefully with their abilities will become successful to return back and then give to that next fledgling group that's in the nest," Anderson said.
