DURHAM, N.C. -

A North Carolina Central University football player received a surprise Wednesday while talking to local elementary students.

Jordan Reid speaking with students about bullying at Global Scholars Academy in Durham when he was surprised with a trophy for being named to the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

The quarterback is one of 22 football players in the country to receive the award, and the first ever from NCCU.

He earned the award for the hours of volunteering he does in the community.

"I think a lot of people don't know their purpose in life, but I definitely know my purpose and that's to serve," Reid said. "I definitely get a joy out of just seeing people find their selves every day, and giving people opportunities that they're not presented with."

Reid helped create an "Adopt-A-Brother" program at Global Scholars Academy.
