Cancer Survivors Enjoy Picnic

Posted: Updated:

Forrest General Hospital hosted the 9th Annual Cancer Survivors Picnic.

Dr. Mike Cheng said the day is all about those survivors.

"This is their day, and we're very happy to see patients coming year after year," Cheng said.  "That means they beat the cancer, and this is their day to celebrate."

Patsy Davis was a young mother of a 13, 11 and 2-year-old when doctors found grapefruit-size tumor in her ovary.  The year was 1977.

"I asked the Lord to let me live to see my 2-year-old because nobody loves a baby like mama," Davis said.  "Not only did he answer that prayer, but now I'm watching her raise five."

Crystal Duncan is 29-years old.  She was diagnosed with stage 4 evasive inductal breast cancer just over a year ago.  At such a young age, she endured a mastectomy, six months of chemotherapy and two months of radiation.

"It was very hard, and it still is very hard," Duncan said.

But now that she's been cancer free nearly three months this is her message, "Life is great. Take every moment that you can because you never know when it's going to end."

Duncan says she is grateful for the chance to participate in today's picnic.

"It's very exciting to be here because, honestly, I didn't think I was going to be here a year ago," she said.

I enjoy being here for those that have cancer now because I can share with them that you can beat that thing because I did," Davis said.

Theoretically, there are ways a Boeing 777 could evade a missile, but experts say the systems are too costly and impractical for commercial jets.
