Officials Work On Lake Serene Dam

Posted: Updated:

LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. - Lamar County officials along with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality are still working to fix the crack in the Lake Serene Dam.

Last week during a routine inspection of Lake Serene and it's dam is when officials found a few problems.

"We walked the face of the dam and we came down to the base of the spillway here and found a boil at the base of the apron," said Warner Boortz, one of the board of directors for Lake Serene's Homeowners Association.

"A boil is water coming up underneath the backside of a dam which indicates that there may be a leak somewhere in the dam," he said.

That's not a good thing because the dam sits right off of Highway 98. They are not sure how long it's been there.

"We had people out here three or four months ago and there was nothing then," he said.

To stop the boil, MDEQ has placed these sand bags down. They are still waiting to find out more information.

"We are hoping to find out what they are planning on doing and what our responsibilities will be," he said.
