Todd Monken Names Nick Mullens Starting QB Against North Texas

Posted: Updated:

Six straight losses to start the season, and Southern Miss head football coach Todd Monken says it is time for change.

"Nick Mullens is going to start this week at quarterback," says Southern Miss head football coach Todd Monken.

Just like that, a true freshman takes over the nation's 85th ranked passing offense.

Mullens steps in for senior redshirt transfer Allan Bridgford, who is fourth in the country with 11 interceptions thrown.

And after going without a third down conversion in the first quarter of Saturday's loss to ECU, Monken knew it was time to make the switch.

"We've got to see what Nick can do," says Monken. "We're obviously struggling offensively, that's part of it. We did assess it a week ago. We looked at every throw of Allan's, we looked at our offense in general, we looked at Nick. We had planned on playing him this past week and we did, and we're just like any position. We're just constantly trying to assess the situation of who gives us the best chance to win."

On paper, the Hoover, Ala. native appears to be the answer.

Before Mullens took over on Saturday, Bridgford tallied just 15 yards on 2-8 passing.

The true freshman surpassed that on his first throw of the game - a 23-yard completion to James Cox.

Despite seeing limited action in three games so far this season, Mullens boasts a 106.2 passer efficiency rating, which is 7.2 points higher than Bridgford's.

Mullens is also on pace to Match Bridgford's six touchdown passes in just 69 throws.

Bridgford threw his sixth score on attempt 179.

But the numbers do not tell the whole story.

"He does have a factor - getting the guys going and that sort of thing - an 'it' factor I guess is what everybody calls it," says Monken. "We think he has that, and so we're hopeful that that will be a spark that we need offensively because we need something, that's for sure."
