PETAL, Miss. - Students at Petal High School were on lockdown this morning, after a teacher spotted a student with a knife.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m., administrators say.

The said  no one was hurt.

The teacher asked all of the students in the class to exit the room.

Administrators contacted police and the student with the knife was taken into custody.

Petal Police Detective Mitch Nobles said the student was then taken to Forrest General Hospital to undergo a mental evaluation.

Buchanan said the lockdown was a standard precaution to ensure the safety of faculty and students at the school.

" In 20 minutes the lockdown drill was over," he said. "No one was hurt in the incident, we notified parents through all of our social media including a phone blast, Twitter, Facebook and our district website."
