Make A Difference Week: Volunteers Prep To Restore Pine Belt

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Volunteers across the Pine Belt are getting ready to help tornado victims still struggling to get back on their feet.

"It's pretty heart wrenching," said Sheila Varnado, executive director for Restore, Rebuild, Recover Southeast Mississippi. "I hear all the cases that are brought before the unmet needs committee."

She said that's why they are sponsoring Make a Difference Week.

"All during the week we'll be having volunteers out in the community helping some of the families who need help," she said.

One of those volunteers is J. C. Gillespie.

"If there's every any need I'm only a couple of hours away so I'm always eager to help out as much as I can," she said.

She volunteers with Team Rubicon, a group of past military members who travel together to help communities in need.

"We came down here after the initial tornado," she said.

Gillespie spent the day picking up supplies to help repair homes.

"We'll be tearing out the sheet rock in one house so that another group can come in and fully fix everything," she said.

Make a Difference Day is Saturday. Varnado said there will be plenty of activities for those who want to participate in recovering the Pine Belt.
