Durham police announced investigators have made a third arrest Thursday in connection with a January 2011 homicide on Canal Street.

Police said Demarcus Antonio Thomas, 23, of Durham, was arrested on charges of conspiring to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the homicide.

Thomas is said by police to have been involved in the shooting death of Jimmie Lamont Harris Jr., 24, of Dowd Street, in the 500 block of Canal Street on January 16, 2011. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim was also shot and was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Thomas was brought to Durham yesterday from a federal prison in West Virginia, where he is serving time on unrelated federal charges, police said.

In March, Veshan M. Chambers, 24, of Durham was indicted on one charge of murder and one charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the death of Harris, police said.

Durham police said investigators arrested Ricky Lamar Rhodes, 21, of Durham on Oct. 9 in connection with the homicide.

Rhodes and Chambers are both being held in the Durham County Jail.
