Lumberton Man Charged in Bizarre Burglaries

Posted: Updated:

Lumberton Police said they received a call around 2:45 this morning from an elderly man who said he was robbed.

The suspect only stole a pack of cigarettes, a staple-gun and $3.  Patrol Officer Guy Serrin said the victim did not get off easy.

"He refused medical {treatment}, but he was all beat up and scared up pretty good," Serrin said.  "He was kicked out of his wheelchair and threatened."

When they left the house, officers noticed a door kicked in at NAPA Auto Parts around the corner.  They went inside to investigate and notified management.

Together, they watched the surveillance cameras and gathered evidence.  According to the video, the suspect stayed for hours trying to open the safe and ransacking the office.

Then the police left.

"I told my boss, Mr. Jerry, I said, 'I think the guy's still in the store because it doesn't look like he exited,' Store Manager Carol Cheramie said.

When the pair climbed to the attic to search, they heard a loud noise.  It was the suspect escaping. He hid in a closet waiting for a chance to leave.  He made it out with $75 and the manager's purse.

"If I had been here by myself in here, after they had left, he would've hurt me," Cheramie said. "I know he would have because he had that anger look in his face."

Police arrested 26-year-old Sean Lancaster in the woods nearby. He is charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and commercial burglary.

Serrin said additional charges of assaulting a vulnerable person and disordarly conduct will most likely be added.

He said this behavior will not be tolerated.

"Well if it's on your mind to come to Lumberton and rob, break into somebody's house, believe me," Serrin said.  "We are watching, and we have extra patrol and they will be on the lookout."
