USM Dedicates Statue - WHLT 22 Connecting the Pine Belt

USM Dedicates Statue

Posted: Updated:

A massive bronze golden eagle statue is finally in place and dedicated to an icon of The University of Southern Mississippi.

The statue perched in front of Hattiesburg's campus is 22 ft. with an 8 ft. base. Its wings span 15 ft., and it is five-feet deep. It took sculptor David Anderson two years to complete the 6,000 lb. project.

USM alumnus Chuck Sienna donated the piece titled "Lofty Return."

It was dedicated in honor of the ninth president of the university, Dr. Martha Saunders.

She said a golden eagle is a fitting mascot for USM because they are known for vision, speed and caring for their young.
