WILMINGTON, N.C. -

A New Hanover County sheriff's deputy has resigned after he was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Authorities say Rudolph Howell resigned on Friday before an internal investigation began.

The New Hanover Sheriff's Office says Howell was stopped on Thursday night by Brunswick County deputies at a checking station on U.S. 17. He was not on duty at the time.

New Hanover deputies say Howell had been with the sheriff's office for nine years. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
