Halloween Safety: How Many Sex Offenders Live Near You?

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Parents be aware , police say there are a lot of dangers when it comes to trick-or-treating on Halloween.

"This particular day, because of all the pedestrians you have more fatalities," said Lt. Jon Traxler of HPD.

Lt. Jon Traxler says one danger most parents don't think about is if the door they are knocking on is the home of a registered sex offender.

"Forrest County actually does the registering of sex offenders," he said.

There are hundreds of names in the database.

Parent Alexandria Yarbrough says she's careful about the houses she takes daughters to Halloween night.

"You got people out here doing things to children just because," she said.

However, she says she's never thought about checking out how many registered sex offenders live in her neighborhood.

"I'm very sensitive about that," she said.

We asked her to her search zip code in the state's database.

"Oh my god," she said, shocked at the news.

"I recognize this one guy that stays in my apartment building," she said.

She says she'll keep that and all the others she found in mind.

"I just don't really trust anyone," she said.
