DURHAM, N.C. -

A crew put the finishing touches Thursday on a new bridge linking Duke University's East and West Campuses.

The N.C. Department of Transportation began work in May to replace the 63-year-old Main Street Bridge, which runs over Campus Drive. Nearly 13,000 cars drive over the bridge each day.

The new bridge is designed to be safer for bikers and pedestrians with bike lanes in each direction and 10-foot sidewalks.

The bridge replacement is part of a series of improvements made along more than a mile of Main Street, including resurfacing and the addition of bike lanes.

While work was completed, drivers were re-routed onto the Durham Freeway and around campus.
