Duke Children's Hospital helps patients to enjoy Halloween

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Around 60 kids at Duke Children's Hospital in Durham paraded down the hallways in full costume for Halloween.

Since many of the children can't eat candy, nurses treated them to toys and books.

It's the hospital's way of letting the kids trick or treat, whereas they would otherwise miss out.

For some, it's even their first Halloween.

"It is a stress reliever. ‘Cause it's really stressful. It's frustrating at times. Everybody's everywhere. It's really busy in here. But, it's definitely an event for a day. It's exciting to know that all these kids have a smile on their face," said Aquilla Stewart-King, whose son is in the hospital.

Her son, 6-month-old Keishaun King, first came to the hospital at 10-weeks-old with a hemorrhage on his brain.

"It's a memory and we're trying to make the hospital experience normal," said organizer and certified child-life specialist, Michelle Ashford.

Spirit Halloween stores donate a percentage of sales to Duke Children's Hospital for the event and donate costumes for the kids.
