USM Police Investigate Campus Sexual Assault

Posted: Updated:

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Police are investigating a rape that allegedly happened earlier this month on campus.

The suspect and the victim are both students.

"On the 15th of this month, one of our female students, a freshman, reported that she had been sexually assaulted on the 13th," said USM Chief of Police Bob Hopkins.

He said the alleged rape happened inside the Kappa Sigma house on Fraternity Row.

"She was an acquaintance with the individual and he was a member of the fraternity," he said.

Hopkins said he met with the victim Thursday to finalize the investigation.

"We are putting together a presentation that we can present to the Forrest County District Attorney's Office for presentation to connect to the next available grand jury," he said.

USM President Rodney Bennett said this is an issue that they do not take lightly.

Any allegation of sexual misconduct, or sexual violence, or assault, or rape is a serious offense and one that the university will look at and take the appropriate action that needs to be taken," Bennett said.

Police said they weren't able to do a rape kit on the victim because the assault was reported two days after it occurred.

"We were able to interview other people of interest that she told us about," Hopkins said.

As of right now, the police say they don't see any charges coming to the Kappa Sigma fraternity as a whole.

"It's just an unfortunate incident that occurred in one of there members' room," Hopkins said.
