Deputy fired for altercation with utility worker

WILMINGTON, N.C. -

A New Hanover County sheriff's deputy has been fired after he tried to use his Taser on a utility worker at his home.

Sgt. Jerry Brewer said Deputy Reed Roberts was at his home in Pender County on Thursday waiting for a Duke Progress Energy worker to restore power to his home.

Brewer said as the technician began reconnecting the power, an altercation developed between Roberts and the worker, leading the deputy to use his Taser.

An internal investigation determined that Roberts violated sheriff's office policy.

Roberts joined the force on Jan. 24, 2012.
