Large explosion near NC high school was possibly Tannerite

CATAWBA, NC -

Reports of an explosion near Charlotte over the weekend are possibly tied to some claims on social media of a planned event done by "kids."

Various folks on Twitter and Facebook were wondering about a very loud noise west of Lake Norman, which is north of Charlotte, sometime on Sunday evening.

Now, users on social media, including a Charlotte TV station weather man, say the blast was near Bandys High School, which is in Catawba County.

"So sounds like some kids set off 22lbs of Tannerite on a floating pallet on a small lake near Bandy's HS. #SMH" wrote Brad Panovich, a WCNC-TV Meteorologist.

Various folks messaged about the incident on Twitter and Facebook, some placing the explosion in Lincoln County, which is just a couple of miles from Bandys.

"Might have been the best night ever. Blew up 22 pounds of tannerite #amazing #scaredpeople22milesaway #firedeplovedit" wrote Twitter user Bennett mcdonald @bmon176.

Panovich later said the incident happened around 9:45 to 10 pm.

A fireman at Bandys Crossroads Fire Department told WBTW-TV the explosion was in a neighborhood off of Buffalo Shoals Road.

Tannerite is the brand name of a binary explosive marketed primarily for making exploding targets for firearms practice. It is a patented combination of two separate powders which are mixed and shaken to produce the explosive.

The combined explosive is relatively stable when subjected to less severe forces than a high-velocity bullet impact, such as a hammer blow, being dropped, or impact from a low-velocity bullet or shotgun blast.
