Southern Miss Basketball Tipoff Preview

Posted: Updated:

On Friday USM's men's and women's basketball teams tip off their regular seasons. The women lead thing off at 11 a.m. against West Alabama, while the men square off with Jackson State University at 7:30 p.m.

The men's team last faced JSU in 2001, in what was coincidentally USM's home opener that year as well. According to, Southern Miss head men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall, renewing the long-forgotten in-state rivalry was intentional.

The game marks Neil Watson's first action since breaking his jaw in early August. The senior point guard returns just in time for the home opener, where the Golden Eagles embark on their goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament come Selection Sunday.

As for the women's game, head coach Joye Lee-McNelis estimates 1,000 children will be in attendance for the team's Education Day.
