Deadly Chevron Accident Caught On Video

Posted: Updated:

Even though this fire was taken care of by the Chevron fire response team on site, it was all hands on deck early this morning.  The staging area near the refinery was filled with fire trucks and first responders that didn't have to go into action--

“Chevron teams themselves handled the incident, they had some air monitoring in place to make sure nothing was released that would impact the environment,” says Earl Etheridge with Jackson County Emergency Services.  Teams from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, local fire departments and others were on hand just in case this bad situation became worse.

“So if they were to have any kind of major incident inside that would have any wind borne products that would affect the environment or the public we need to protect our public,” says Etheridge.  Officials say the victim was working on the furnace of what's known as a cracking unit--it breaks down unrefined crude oil into other products for fuels.  The Friday morning death coincides with what was supposed to be a 50th anniversary celebration slated for Saturday.  The victim's name is Tonya "Toni" Graddy.  Officials say she had been working there for five years.  Because of the accident, tomorrow's anniversary celebration has been postponed indefinitely.

“Just not in a mind set to be thinking about celebratory events or anything like that,” says Chevron Public and Governmental Affairs Manager Alan Sudduth.  Most people in the neighborhood nearby were sound asleep when the explosion happened.  A couple people told me they were awoken by a rumble that sounded like thunder.

We'll have the video up after the story airs at PM CST
